Can Gio, known as the “green lung” of Ho Chi Minh City, is a peaceful coastal district famous for its UNESCO-recognized mangrove biosphere reserve. Located about 50 kilometers southeast of the city center, this unique destination offers a refreshing escape into nature while preserving an important chapter of Vietnam’s wartime history. The mangrove forests once served as a strategic base for Viet Cong forces during the Vietnam War and today stand as a symbol of resilience and environmental restoration. One of Can Gio’s most popular attractions is Monkey Island, home to over 1,500 wild rhesus monkeys. Visitors can interact with these playful animals, but should keep a close watch on personal belongings, as the monkeys are known for their curiosity. Can Gio is also one of the few places in Vietnam dedicated to bat conservation. A short boat ride through the mangroves leads to a secluded lagoon where hundreds of large fruit bats rest among the trees, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s rich biodiversity. Combining wildlife, history, and natural beauty, Can Gio provides an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and explorers alike.
