Buon Ma Thuot enchants visitors with its vast coffee plantations, magnificent waterfalls, and the scenic beauty of the legendary Serepok River and serene Lak Lake. First introduced by the French in 1915, coffee has become the lifeblood of Dak Lak, now Vietnam’s leading coffee-producing province. The city celebrates this rich heritage each March during the lively Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival. While the city itself has relatively few attractions, it serves as the gateway to exploring Dak Lak’s expansive volcanic plateau, shaped millions of years ago and surrounded by rolling mountains and fertile valleys. The Krong Ana and Krong Kno rivers merge to form the mighty Serepok River, which feeds the impressive Dray Nur and Dray Sap waterfalls before winding through Yok Don National Park, Vietnam’s largest protected area, on its journey toward Cambodia. Although nearly half of Dak Lak remains forested, its rich biodiversity faces increasing pressure from logging and habitat loss, making conservation efforts crucial to preserving this remarkable highland landscape.
