Introduction

Vietnam Backroads is the first company to tailor-made bike tours to Mekong Delta's Vietnam's wetland, Dong Thap Muoi. The yearly flooded season happens from September to the last of October, so farmers here do not do rice crops this time, except many districts have well-developed dams to ring the rice paddy with many agricultural channels.

Xeo Quyt Forest has an area of 52-hectare near My Hiep village. The vast swamp full of tall cajeput trees. Cajeput tree is a common name used for a specific tree classification with a white spongy bark that easily flakes off the trunk. Viet Cong built its base inside the forest in 1960 with bunkers, meeting rooms, command headquarter, etc. The forest is the home to many fresh fish and serval birds and storks. The Xeo Quyt is the ecological site and offers rowed sampan to visit historical relics, admire the scenery, and learn about the touch life in Vietnam War.

We depart at 7:30 am to Cai Be, travel on the freeway for about 2.5 hours. Upon arrival, we ride to explore a network of Mekong River's branches. Enjoy riding through hamlets, visiting old temples, relaxing on little ferry boats, crossing the water channels, and exploring life on waterways that people grow fish on floating farms. We will stop at the vibrant Cai Thia market, the ancient community houses. Enjoy snacks, cold drinks, fresh fruits, and visit the old community temple.

You can imagine- sampan boats, water taxis, and little grocery boats advertise what they want to sell by loudspeaker. Afterward, we cycle along rivers, passing stilt houses and small markets to An Thoi Trung villages. Following lunch en route, we have a transfer for 30 minutes to Xeo Quyt forest. Visit the former Viet Cong base by sampan rowing boat. Viet Cong built its's base here in 1960 against the South Vietnamese army.

The afternoon ride is on the path, through canals, rural farms of water hyacinth, eggplant, bitter melon, cucumbers. The routes are open paths across the vast rural farmlands, and then we follow the quiet back roads, pass flower gardens, and small town. We will take a transfer from My Tho township to Cao Lanh City.

Get some carbohydrates and local dishes, then begin today's ride with 10 minutes vehicle drive you to the start point in town. We cycle on a narrow lane that takes us to the town's outskirts. It's a great time to explore the rural riverside villages in the morning, ride through mango orchards, some small crouching markets which start in the early morning at corners and forks in rural villages, where locals pass by in the morning. We catch a ferry boat to the other side of the Mekong River, ride on shady pathways along rustic villages, enjoy different sceneries of the countryside. Stop off a famous flower village in Sadec. Enjoy coffee, take a walk through, experience the ways to grow the finest flowers and learn more about many beautiful small plants.

Afterward, we ride into Sadec, a small town located by the river. Break for lunch at the quaint house, and the house belonged to Mr Huynh Thuy Le, who was the lover of Marguerite Duras. Marguerite Duras was the daughter of a French family living in Sadec, running the school in town. She fell in love with Mr. Huynh Thuy Le in Sadec from 1928 to 1932. She was a French novelist. Later their love story got into the movie " The Lover". Sadec is one of the last remnants of old Indochina in Vietnam, still displaying it’s French architectural heritage in French-built villas along the canal. Visit a colorful local market before the afternoon leisurely ride as we cycle slowly and enjoy the scenic scenery. We pass a village making rice power and sweet potato plantation. Take a rest on the vehicle transfer to Can Tho city. Check-in the hotel, and take the rest of the day, and have dinner in town.

After leisurely breakfast, enjoy a motorised boat trip to the busiest floating market. Hundreds of boats gather to trade agricultural products, which are from other provinces in the delta.  After breakfast, take a 40-minute boat trip from Ninh Kieu Pier to Cai Rang. Watch hundreds of small boats exchange farm products, from boat to boat. The boat will get through the floating market slowly, so all things on your sight. Every boat has a long upright pole at its bow on which samples of the goods for sale hung on the bamboo sticks with bananas, pineapple, sweet potatoes, watermelons and so on.

Disembark your boat for a short transfer to the other side of Hau Giang River to Binh Minh for a half-day ride. We cycle through the vast rice paddy fields, explore the Khmer villages, and stop visiting some colourful Khmer temples, and the small workshop produces hats, handbags, indoor sandals, and bins, all made from water hyacinths. We end up the ride in Tam Binh, lunch en-route before returning to Saigon by vehicle. Tour End!

Dates

Currently, this tour have no schedule, yet.

I had a really good time by bicycling for 3 days with Vietnam Backroads. I enjoyed watching people living in villages and greeting them, especially kids.... It would be nice if we could choose the food for breakfast, lunch, dinner with our guide and have them with him. I wanted to eat breakfast and dinner at local restaurants, markets, not in hotels. Thank you so much for your wonderful guide and I appreciated everything. A-ri-ga-to. Sep 16, 2014

Dat- the guide and Toan- the driver were fantastic! They really made us enjoy our time. Dat was incredibly knowledgeable and took great care of us. The only problem was the trip went too fast! Thank you for the trip of life time. We won't forget this experience any time soon. Jeremy_ May 1, 2014

Tha and Mr Phuong were very friendly, helpful, patient and alternative. Bike were axcellent especially basket would be even better with a bell.
The bike ride/paths were fantastic for a future ride we would be interesting in options for smaller, family- accommodation including in villages ( rather highhotels)
It would be great to see your company making efforts to reduce single-use plastic, big water tank/ bottles on bus and provide re-fillable bottles or encourage BYO bottle.
It was great that Tha was fexible in break.meals options when we shoews interest in small local options.
