Cycling in the Mekong Delta Vietnam. A large percentage of Ca Mau Province is covered by forest, including 150,000 hectares of alluvial soils, typical of tropical regions with annual monsoons. Being flooded everyday by tidal waters, the salt-bearing trees grow in this environment with animals and microorganisms. Day 1: Saigon – Long An – Ben Tre (L/D) (50 km)
Begin in Saigon and transfer by van/bus for an hour out of town. Start riding on back roads to Can Duoc belonged to Long An province. This town is known throught Vietnam as the land of jasmine rice and sticky rice. Visit Rach Cat base (French built in 1903) ride to visit an ancient house with 100 support columns. Enjoy tea and fruit with the owner of this ancient house. Continue riding to Cho Gao, located further southwest of Saigon. Have lunch in town, take a motorized boat to Ben Tre to taste fresh honey and local fruits, and visit a workshop which specializes in making a very unique coconut candy. Overnight in local house.
Day 2: Ben Tre - Tra Vinh - Soc Trang (B/L/D) (100 km)
Begin the ride from our home-stay to Mo Cay. Bike through coconut plantations and water palm fields to Tra Vinh city. Lunch in town. Pedal past Khmer villages, visit Khmer temples, then pedal to Cau Quan. From Cau Quan take a ferry to an island, then cycle for 3 km to another ferry. Travel by ferry to Dai Ngai, Soc Trang province. Stay in Soc Trang city.
Day 3: Soc Trang - Bac Lieu - Ca Mau (B/L/D) (90 km)
In the morning visit a Khmer museum, Clay Pagoda, and Bat Pagoda, by bike, then continue pedaling on rural roads to Bac Lieu. Stop for lunch at the former residence of Bac Lieu Prince, whose parents were the richest people in the Mekong Delta region during the French Indochina era. Named Tran Trinh Huy, the prince spent money like water [until he was an elderly man]. Transfer to Ca Mau in the late afternoon. Overnight in Ca Mau city.
Day 4: Ca Mau - Rach Gia (B/L/D) (90 km)
Ride to Upper U - Minh forest, spend 1 1/2 hours by row boat to a mangrove forest: taste wild honey and observe thousand of bats, storks and birds in a big mangrove forest. Have lunch in restaurant. After lunch, bike on country roads to Rach Gia city via to Rach Soi town. Overnight in Rach Gia city.
Day 5: Rach Gia-Chau Doc (B/L/D) (80 km)
Ride from your hotel to Tri Ton, pedal on country roads among rice fields and along the water. Visit the infamous Ba Chuc "killing fields" and have lunch in restaurant in Ba Chuc. Continue biking to Tinh Bien border gate, transfer to Chau Doc border town. Overnight in town
Day 6: Chau Doc-Cao Lanh (B/L/D) (70 km)
Chau Doc is located west of the Mekong Delta between upper and lower branches of Mekong River. The town is famous as the gateway between Vietnam to Cambodia. Take a motorized boat for 1 hour to a floating village and Cham village. Visit a mosque and sarong workshop. Checkout of the hotel and bike to a ferry which will take us to Chau Giang Dist. Ride on dirt track to Cho Moi, pedal past Hoa Hao Buddhism holy temple, have lunch in Cho Moi. From this town, we will take a little ferry to the Island, and pedal to the Monastery, which was built 120 years ago by the French. The first monastery building site was established in 1874 in Indochina. Today's transportation will be 100% by bicycle: we will explore many islands and end up at Cao Lanh city. Overnight in Cao Lanh.
Day 7: Cao Lanh - Sai Gon (B/L) (55 km)
Ride on back roads and little track along the water to My Tho district, the small town about 25 km from Cao Lanh. Enjoy coffee and rest your tired legs! Then cycle to Xeo Quyt base, where Viet Cong guide will take you into the Xeo Quyt mangrove forest by row boat. Lunch in Xeo Quyt restaurant. After lunch, ride 20 km to Cai Be Dist and drive back to Saigon. End of tour.
